At NDSU, you can push yourself to reach new heights.
That’s the message of NDSU student-athlete Michelle Gaislerova, a junior majoring in journalism and minoring in business.
She knows a lot about success, because she is a star performer both in the classroom and in sports.
Gaislerova is a starting guard on the Bison women’s basketball team, but she also excels academically; she has been voted to the Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team, Summit League All-Academic Team and has twice been named to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll. She recently made headlines by setting an NCAA Division I record of 75 consecutive free throws.
Does her competitive nature on the court spill over into her classes?
“Certainly, I don’t compete with my classmates, but within myself – that is the case. I want to reach the highest standard I can,” said Gaislerova, who grew up in the Czech Republic and attended a year of high school in Lincoln, Nebraska. “There isn’t a secret to it. It’s hard work, dedication and having fun. Just try to be the best version of yourself.”
Gaislerova gained a love for writing early in life, so journalism is the perfect area of study. In middle school, she produced her own blog and as a high-schooler she wrote about youth basketball for a website. She now writes about NCAA and professional basketball for another website.
NDSU has proven to be the right choice to hone her many skills. She dreams of a professional basketball career, but is also planning to earn a master’s degree, perhaps in educational leadership or emergency management.
“I have only positive words about NDSU. My experience here has been awesome, honestly,” Gaislerova said. “The atmosphere is fantastic here and I love our NDSU community. This is an awesome place to be.
“When I think of NDSU, I think about excellence in terms of athletics and academics. I’ve been having a blast since day one.”
